SABIC Develops New Packaging PET and HDPE Resins

SABIC is one of the world's leading polymer producers and produced 7.2 million tons of polymer last year. SABIC is the single producer and supplier of the most comprehensive polymer resin products in the world, and one of the few companies in the world that produces all five of the most widely used thermoplastic resins.

SABIC invested a lot of resources in the research and development of plastic manufacturing technology, aiming to increase product categories, improve quality and output, reduce costs and protect the environment.

New PET makes water containers clearer

Bulk water containers typically have a capacity of five gallons or more and are commonly used in office tea rooms or even in the home. In the water packaging process, how to increase its clarity to show its pure water quality is of utmost importance. The standard PET resin used in most beverage packagings is generally not suitable for the production of such water bottles due to its high crystallization rate, large crystals, and loss of clarity of water bottles.

SABIC's research and technology department has developed a new type of PET with a slow crystallization rate that provides crystal clearness. This compound is SABIC(r) PET BC-113.

SABIC(r) PET BC-113 is a semi-crystalline, high molecular weight thermoplastic polymer that has been processed through continuous melt polymerization and solid state polymerization.

The SABIC(r) PET BC-113 provides far more than two polymer resins commonly used today for the manufacture of five-gallon water containers, including costly polycarbonate (PC) resins and poorly clear polypropylene (PP). Outstanding clarity, no odor, excellent drop impact strength. It is also a low-cost alternative to polycarbonate resin, which has a cost advantage over other packaging materials, thus reducing the manufacturer's cost.

Establish a new standard for long shelf life milk packaging
For many years, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has been widely used for dairy packaging. It is the only material that can be used to package pasteurized milk, ultra-high temperature treated milk, and sterilized milk.

Longer shelf life milk has extremely stringent packaging requirements. Milk must be protected from UV radiation and HDPE bottles must not react with milk.

In response to these stringent requirements, SABIC has developed a SABIC(r) HDPE B6246LS exclusive product. Its unique design combines superior aesthetics with the high hardness and impact resistance of the bottle. In addition, due to the small differences between batches of raw materials, it also has excellent processing properties.

With SABIC(r) HDPE B6246LS and proper mixing, processors and manufacturers can expect significant cost savings. HDPE B6246LS is a colorless particle that allows the processor to find the best balance between cost and color determination required for each specific application. Proper color mixing represents an important step in reducing overall package costs compared to premixed resins.
