In 2013, about 2.5 billion people globally read printed newspapers, while 800 million accessed news through digital platforms. Although global print newspaper circulation rose by 2% that year, it had declined by 2% between 2009 and 2013. Meanwhile, paid digital newspaper subscriptions saw a significant jump of 60% in 2013, with a more than 2000% increase over the previous five years—starting from a very low base. Over the five-year period from 2009 to 2013, Asia and Latin America both saw growth of around 6%, while North America, Australia, and Europe experienced much higher declines. The Middle East and Africa showed modest growth during this time. Overall, paper newspaper circulation is still rising in developing regions and areas with lower internet penetration, while digital access is becoming more common in other parts of the world. In terms of revenue, global newspaper circulation and advertising income totaled $163 billion in 2013—essentially flat compared to the previous year but down from $187 billion in 2008. Revenue sources were distributed as follows: 36% from Asia, 34% from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, 21% from North America, and 9% from Latin America. Television remained the largest source of advertising revenue at 40.1%, followed by the internet at 20.7%, newspapers at 16.9%, magazines at 7.9%, outdoor ads at 7%, broadcasting at 6.9%, and movies at just 0.5%. In 2013, print newspaper ad revenue fell by 6%, with a 13% decline over five years. However, digital newspaper ads increased by 11% in 2013, up 47% from 2009. Despite this growth, digital ads still represented only a small portion of total newspaper revenue. Globally, 93% of newspaper revenue came from print editions. Regionally, print ad revenue in Latin America rose by 3.9% in 2013, while it fell in all other regions: 3.2% in Asia and the Pacific, 8.7% in North America, 8.2% in Europe, and 1.8% in the Middle East and Africa.
