[Outdoor Events] UTWT (International Trail Running Tour) Future Event MIUT Opening
The Madeira Islands, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Atlantic," are a stunning archipelago belonging to Portugal, situated off the western coast of Africa. These subtropical islands were formed by volcanic activity and are known for their dramatic landscapes, lush forests, and breathtaking views. In Portuguese, "Madeira" translates to "wood," a name that reflects the island's rich natural vegetation. Located roughly 1,000 kilometers southwest of Lisbon and just 600 kilometers from the Moroccan coastline, Madeira offers a unique blend of European charm and tropical beauty.
One of the most exciting events on the island is the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT), which was added to the UTWT Future Event list in 2014. Founded in 2008, MIUT has grown into a premier ultrarunning event, offering runners a variety of distances, including the main 115-kilometer race with an elevation gain of 6,850 meters. The race typically takes place in April, with the 2015 edition held on the 9th and 12th of the month. Additional shorter routes include 85 km, 40 km, and 17 km options, making it accessible to a wide range of participants.
Whether you're an experienced ultrarunner or just starting out, the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail provides an unforgettable experience through some of the most scenic trails in the world. The island’s rugged terrain, combined with its mild climate, makes it an ideal destination for adventure seekers.
