Hangzhou Fitness Market Survey Report
**Hangzhou Fitness Market Survey Report – November 18, 2014**
According to our recent survey conducted on November 18, 2014, the fitness market in Hangzhou shows interesting trends regarding consumer behavior and preferences. One of the key findings is that 30% of respondents spend between RMB 3,000 and 5,000 annually on personal trainers, with an hourly rate ranging from 200 to 800 RMB. This highlights the growing demand for personalized training services among fitness enthusiasts.
Interestingly, while many people are drawn to annual gym memberships, only less than 20% of them maintain long-term exercise habits. The majority tend to sign up for annual cards, which accounted for 20.8% of the responses, followed by monthly (14.6%) and half-yearly (16.2%) options. However, despite the high initial commitment, most individuals struggle to keep up with regular workouts, indicating a gap between intent and action.
In terms of preferred activities, aerobic equipment was the top choice for 24.9% of respondents, followed closely by swimming at 23.9%. Strength training equipment came in third at 17.1%, with spinning bikes (11.8%), yoga (11.6%), and group classes like belly dance, Latin, and jazz (7.9%) also showing significant interest.
Gender differences were clearly visible in these preferences. Women tended to favor yoga, spinning, and swimming, often for reasons related to stress relief, body shaping, and mental well-being. Men, on the other hand, leaned more toward aerobic and strength equipment, aiming for physical improvement, increased stamina, and stress management. According to Wang Xiaoyi, director of the Cosmopolitan fitness market, women’s fitness goals are typically centered around weight loss and body shaping, making activities like yoga and dance appealing. Meanwhile, men are often drawn to high-intensity workouts such as spinning, which not only burn calories but also offer an exciting, motivational environment through group chants and rhythmic encouragement.
The cost of fitness memberships in Hangzhou varies widely. For instance, the annual fee at Cosmopolitan ranges from 2,880 RMB in standard branches to 5,000 RMB in more upscale locations. Despite this, the average annual spending among respondents showed a wide range: 18.1% spent between 3,001 and 5,000 RMB, 16% between 1,001 and 3,000 RMB, 15.1% between 500 and 1,000 RMB, and a small percentage spent over 10,000 RMB or less than 1,000 RMB per year.
In conclusion, while there is strong interest in fitness and a variety of options available, maintaining consistent participation remains a challenge. As Ma Jianqing from Weijue Fitness pointed out, only a small fraction of members truly commit to long-term exercise routines. This suggests that gyms may need to focus more on engagement strategies to help members stay motivated and committed.
