Hangzhou Fitness Market Survey Report
**Hangzhou Fitness Market Survey Report – November 18, 2014**
According to our recent survey, 30% of respondents spend between RMB 3,000 and 5,000 annually on personal fitness trainers, who charge around RMB 200 to 800 per hour. This shows a growing interest in personalized training services among fitness enthusiasts in Hangzhou.
Interestingly, while many people prefer to purchase an annual gym membership, only less than 20% of them maintain consistent long-term exercise habits. This suggests that although there is initial enthusiasm, sustaining regular physical activity remains a challenge for most individuals.
When it comes to preferred types of workouts, the data reveals some clear gender trends. Women tend to favor yoga, spinning, and swimming, while men are more inclined toward aerobic equipment, strength training machines, and high-intensity workouts like spinning. According to Wang Xiaoyi, director of the Cosmopolitan fitness market, women often use these activities to improve their body shape, reduce stress, and enhance mental well-being. Meanwhile, men are more focused on building strength, improving health, and managing stress through physical exertion.
In terms of specific workout choices, 24.9% of respondents prefer aerobic equipment such as treadmills and climbing machines, 23.9% choose swimming, 17.1% go for strength training, 11.8% opt for spinning bikes, 11.6% prefer yoga, and 7.9% enjoy dance-based classes like Latin, Jazz, or fight dance. The popularity of spinning has been particularly notable, with many gyms reporting full attendance during these sessions. Coaches often use energetic chants and music to keep participants motivated, making the experience both fun and intense.
Regarding payment methods, the survey found that 20.8% of respondents choose the annual card, which is the most popular option, followed by 20.4% who pay as they go. Other options include half-year (16.2%), monthly (14.6%), and quarterly (12.4%) memberships.
In terms of annual spending, 18.1% of respondents spend between RMB 3,001 and 5,000 per year, 16% spend between RMB 1,001 and 3,000, and 15.1% spend between RMB 500 and 1,000. A small percentage, about 0.9%, spends over RMB 10,000 annually.
Gym fees in Hangzhou typically range from RMB 2,000 to 3,000 per year for an annual card. For example, Cosmopolitan charges RMB 2,880 for a standard annual membership, while more upscale locations like Yintai West may charge up to RMB 5,000. Despite this, many members fail to maintain regular attendance, with less than 20% consistently showing up for workouts. As Ma Jianqing from Weijue Fitness noted, the key challenge lies not in access, but in motivation and discipline.
