Analysis of Adhesion of Film Adhesive UV Ink

In the market of self-adhesive label materials, the biggest difference between thin-film self-adhesive materials and paper is that the surface is not absorbent. At present, most printing companies use UV inks on thin-film self-adhesive labels. To print, because the UV ink printing can use UV drying method and its good adhesion. Although UV inks have the advantages of fast drying speed, good printing effect, good scratch resistance and good solvent resistance, UV inks are new technologies developed in recent years. Customers often encounter printing processes. For some problems, the most common problem is the problem of UV ink adhesion on the surface of the film material.

First, what is the poor adhesion of UV ink?

The so-called poor adhesion of ink is through some kind of test method, the ink is detached from the film surface. Depending on the different requirements of the end user, there may be differences in the test methods for each customer. In the label printing industry, most customers use 3M 810 or 3M 610 adhesive tape for adhesion testing.

Second, the cause of poor ink adhesion

1. Insufficient drying of UV inks In actual printing production, customers often encounter UV inks irradiated by ultraviolet light, the ink surface has been dry but the internal is not completely dry. In this case, there is no completely dry ink, and the binding force on the surface of the film material is relatively weak, and it is easy to tear the ink off the surface of the material when testing with the tape.

2. The surface tension of the PE/PP film material is insufficient. Before the printing, the surface tension of the PE film material should be checked by using a Dyne pen or a dyne solution. If a good UV ink adhesion is to be ensured, the surface tension must be at least 42 dyne. cm. If the surface tension before printing does not meet the requirements, it will result in poor adhesion of the ink.

3. Incompatible inks For some film materials (eg PET, BOPP), the material supplier processes a coating on the surface for the material to print. Because different inks use different resins, printing on the same coating layer will often show different results. The purchase of coated materials should consult the material supplier's ink brand for the material.

In response to the above three situations, we propose the following solutions:

1. In judging whether the ink is completely dry, we can use the thumb pressing method, that is, using the thumb with a strong press on the ink surface and then back and forth several times, if the ink appears on the thumb, you can determine that the ink is not dry completely . There are many reasons why the ink is not completely dry. There may be problems with the ink itself, and it may also be a problem with the UV drying system. Here mainly pay attention to the following aspects:

(1) If the UV ink is not used up, be sure to cover the lid and be careful not to light during storage. The stored ambient temperature should be around 20 °C, not too high temperature.

(2) The UV lamp usage time is generally around 1000 hours. Once the UV lamp exceeds the service life, its spectral curve has changed, and the emitted UV light has not met the requirements of the dried ink. Therefore, we should correctly record the use of UV lamps and replace them in a timely manner.

2. For thin film materials, we can be divided into two categories from the point of view of suitable printing. One is: materials that require corona treatment to print; the other is that the material itself has been processed with a printable coating. For customers, depending on the capabilities of their own printing equipment, for example, there is a corona device that is not processed on-line to determine what kind of material to purchase. If the customer's printing machine has a corona treatment unit, corona treatment material can be purchased. Before printing, we must measure the surface tension of the material. If it is lower than 42 dyne/cm, we must perform in-line corona treatment before printing. This will ensure good ink adhesion. If the surface of the material already has a printable coating, the customer should consult the manufacturer of the material that the material manufacturer should use because different coating formulations are suitable for different brands of ink. Only in the case of coating and ink matching can solve the problem of ink adhesion.

In summary, if we encounter the problem of ink adhesion of thin-film materials in production, we should analyze the reasons correctly so that we can find the correct solution to the problem.
