The British Museum 3D prints the skeleton bones to restore their original appearance

Dove, a fascinating and unique creature, has the front half of a zebra and the body of a horse. In reality, its spotted appearance strongly resembles a hybrid between a zebra and a horse. Unfortunately, this magical animal is extinct, having disappeared over 140 years ago, so you can't see it in the wild. However, you can still view its skeletal remains, which are preserved in museums. One such specimen is displayed at the British Museum, showcasing the rare and distinctive features of this extinct species. Another example, a South African species, was unfortunately lost to extinction more than 140 years ago, in the 19th century. In the London Museum, there's a rare scorpion skeleton that was once mistaken for a zebra skeleton for many years. Today, it's highly valued, and the museum has used 3D printing technology to restore its missing leg. The restoration team scanned the existing right hind leg, created a 3D model, and printed a replacement for the left leg that had been lost. This particular specimen is one of only seven known scorpion skeletons worldwide. The process involved using CT scans to capture the details of the remaining leg, then printing a solid model using black nylon. The 3D-printed leg is clearly marked as a replica, not the original, to ensure transparency. The museum has made significant efforts to preserve and restore these valuable specimens. For many years, the museum mistakenly believed the skeleton belonged to a zebra. It wasn’t until 1972 that scientists discovered the error during an inspection. One of the "zebra" skeletons was actually a rare spotted animal, but it lost a leg during a loan and has never been returned. Now, with the help of 3D technology, the museum has replaced the missing leg with a nylon copy, allowing the specimen to be restored. Although it’s a reproduction, the museum is committed to further restoration projects. They plan to use the same technique on the other 38 damaged specimens, aiming to bring back the integrity of their collection. This effort highlights the importance of modern technology in preserving and restoring historical artifacts. It also serves as a reminder of how scientific advancements can correct past misunderstandings and bring new life to ancient remains. (Editor)
