Japan launches food packaging fiber

The Belu-Ans fiber developed by the Japanese Bell spinning company has recently been formally used in the field of food packaging materials and has been recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This superabsorbent fiber is used for water absorption in foods. Its water absorption capacity is five times that of the latter in comparison with the low pulp series. The fiber is a non-woven sheet and absorbs 50 ml of water per gram, even if added. Pressure can also maintain its moisture. This highly water-absorbing, highly hygroscopic fiber absorbs 180 times its own weight of water, mainly to fully absorb the blood and moisture of fish and meat, and to maintain the freshness of food. Its safety has been recognized and it is expected that in 2008 the fiber will expand its sales to 1,000 tons.
