Detailed explanation of the use of seven different icc files (Part 1)

We generally refer to the icc characteristic file as the device characteristic file, because usually the icc file describes the color range that a specific device (scanner, monitor, printer, etc.) can express and the relationship between this color range and the Lab color mode. A kind of file. But in fact, in addition to device characteristics, icc feature files also have some other types of feature files.

There are 7 different types of icc files specified by the International Color Consorium. They are: input device characteristic file, display device characteristic file, output device characteristic file (the above is device characteristic file), device connection characteristic file, color space conversion characteristic file, abstract characteristic file, named color characteristic file.

Input device characteristic file

Enter the device characteristic file, which is the icc file for scanners and digital cameras that we usually understand. In theory, the icc file of the input device supports grayscale, RGB colors, CMYK colors, and multi-channel color input devices. But in actual use, only RGB color icc files are used. Moreover, there is currently no software that can produce grayscale or CMYK or multi-channel icc.

The input device icc file is a special file that can only be used on the input device (eg: added in the control panel / scanner properties / color management), as follows:

Although the input device icc is also an RGB icc file, it cannot be set to use in the RGB working space of Photoshop and other software (photoshop color management / RGB working space setting). The RGB working space of application software such as photoshop must use display device characteristic files.

In photoshop, if you want to use the input device icc file for the image, you can only select the "Specify as profile" command, and specify the color space of the image as the input device icc file (the "convert to profile" command cannot use the input device icc Documents).

This is a headache for many digital photographers. Digital cameras cannot dive into your special icc file, but directly assign the photo to the RGB color space set by photoshop, which will change the color of the picture. Therefore, the captured pictures must be designated as input device icc files one by one in Photoshop. Of course, you can also use Photoshop batch processing to specify configuration files in batches.

If the digital camera uses the RAW format for shooting, you can use the color setting function of the CaptureOne software to first specify the RAW format picture taken by the digital camera as a special feature file for the digital camera, and then convert the picture to the phtotshop working space through the rinse command , So as to avoid the color deviation caused by directly designating the picture as phtotshop working space.
