Gold Electronic Weighing Success Story

Gold Electronic Weighing Success Story-By Douglas Beadle

In mid-May, at the JP Morgan vault, a brand new electronic scale suitable for weighing large gold bars is being demonstrated. Representatives from all the vaults in London participated in the event. By the end of the event, all participants were convinced that this new scale developed by Sartorius was as accurate and precise as the short-arm balance. So far, only it can be used to weigh gold bars in the London vault.
This marked that the electronic scales sought for gold, which lasted 6 years, were accepted by the London market. Most practitioners in the weighing industry believe that the most accurate weighing method for the strict standards of the London gold market is the traditional well-maintained short-arm balance—which gathers the necessary experience of the operator as much as possible. Weighing a short arm balance is a time-consuming process. In addition, regular maintenance is a very professional job that only a few highly skilled technicians can perform.
For the above reasons, the London Bullion Market Association Management Committee reported to the Physics Committee in June 2004 that it decided to set up a working group to discuss whether it is allowed to use not only traditional short-arm balances but also electronic scales in the London market. This is not to cancel the short-arm balance in the traditional sense, but an alternative method is needed to help maintain London's status as the main physical gold settlement center in the world. This electronic weighing survey also reflects that gold refiners and many other trading centers are already using electronic scales with no problems (even if their weighing standards may be looser than London).
At first I didn't expect this process to take 6 years. Why does it take so long to find a scale with proper performance? There are many reasons. First of all, the scale used for the trial must be adapted to the daily work of the vault. For several years, the amount of gold in and out of the London vault has been unprecedented. Second, a detailed test should be carried out at the most appropriate time, and the accuracy and applicability of the scale should be determined during the busy time of the vault. During the trial period, the gold bars were first weighed using a traditional short-arm balance, and then tested using an electronic scale (Scale 1). If the preliminary test results look promising, then use another identical scale and compare the weighing results of scale 1 and scale 2 by the vault. The last step is to place the scale 2 and the gold bars used for weighing the first vault on the short arm balance and scale 1 respectively to the second London vault, then use the short arm balance and scale 2 to weigh, and then weigh all To compare the results.

Each such test usually requires more than five tons of gold bars (about 400 bars) or more. Through these tests, repeatability is especially critical for tight gold bars and is a major issue.
It was concluded that the accuracy of the first scale did not reach the accuracy of the short arm. At that time, there was no higher precision scale, which led to the project being put on hold for about a year.
More than two years later, the German manufacturer, Sartorius produced a prototype scale for testing, and the accuracy was greatly improved compared to the previous test scale. However, it is more difficult to comply with EU legal weighing. Troy ounces indicate that before rounding, 0.005 troy ounces need to be displayed, while the metric allows 0.01 grams, which is equivalent to 0.0003 troy ounces. Given that the London Bullion Market Association ’s weighing rules require gold bars to be traded in multiples of 0.025 ounces, the trowel shows too much to be rounded correctly. It is impossible for the London Bullion Market Association to change the weighing rules, use the metric system, and abandon the multiple of 0.025 ounces.
Therefore, the prototype scale of Sartorius is a metric scale, which means that the legal weighing is stored in the metric system internally, but the operator can convert it into a considerable troy for display. Sartorius scales use integrated Alibi memory to save the date, time, legal trade metric weighing, scale serial number, and transaction number, thereby establishing a connection to automatically audit the troy weighing and return to the original legal metric weight. In this way, the European Union's weighing regulations are complied with, as well as the historic weighing rules of the London Bullion Market Association.
A further extensive trial run by two major London vaults, Weighing Consultants Jagger & Jagger of the London Bullion Market Association, analyzed the results and concluded that the prototype scales described above did indeed meet the requirements of the London market.
Obviously, whether using short arm balances or scales, it is very important that the environmental conditions should be as constant as possible. For example, airflow can easily affect the accuracy of the scale. During the test weighing process, Treasury used its own windshield, but it was not without problems. The material of the windshield caused the accumulation of static electricity. A draft shield is necessary to prevent the gold bars from suddenly falling onto the scale and causing damage to the scale. Therefore, as part of the overall plan, Sartorius specifically created airflow eliminators for this purpose. From the beginning, these problems were solved in a unified way, hoping to use the scale anywhere in the world to maximize the repeatability of the weighing results. Before the London Bullion Market Association can approve the use of electronic weighing as another method of weighing gold in the London market, two steps must be completed in advance.
First, Sartorius must obtain EU type approval in Germany (where the scale is manufactured). Since Sartorius, as an experienced scale manufacturer, obtains model approval, it is not expected to be a problem and should only take a few months. Sartorius confirmed that it had obtained enough orders from the London Treasury and submitted them as added value, so that the new scale was approved by the model.
Secondly, the London Bullion Market Association hopes to consult all approved weighing equipment in the London market and purchase new scales once it has accumulated enough experience in use.
Looking ahead, the London Bullion Market Association will not limit electronic weighing, but the specifications of Sartorius ’new scales provide a benchmark, and any other product must equal or exceed it. In addition, even if the electronic weighing is approved, the treasury will continue to use the short-arm balance for the announcement of the weight (the confidant of the gold bar).
It is hoped that the project will be completed at the end of this year. At the same time, the approved gold weighing method will assist the vault to obtain more accurate, more efficient and faster weighing than before. Because a lot of gold inevitably flows in the London market.
