Zhang rice new products will visit the 2015 Basel Watch Fair in Switzerland
January 10, 2015, Beijing. China’s rising star in the luxury watch industry, Zhang Rice, made a bold debut at the 2015 Basel Watch Fair with its exclusive preview of the “Oracle – Silk Road†collection. This marked the first time the brand showcased its work on the global stage, capturing attention with its unique blend of traditional Chinese culture and modern design.
Inspired by the ancient Chinese characters known as Oracle (甲骨文) and the legendary Silk Road, the new collection is a tribute to China’s rich heritage. The brand collaborated with the China Watch Association and master ceramicist Luoyang San Cai to create a series that not only reflects the beauty of Chinese art but also introduces innovative techniques into the world of horology.
The “Oracle†timepiece, the brand's first to feature oracle script on its dial, broke away from conventional Western numbering systems. Instead, it used hand-painted Chinese zodiac symbols, offering a fresh and culturally significant take on watch design. This move was not just a creative experiment but a statement that Chinese craftsmanship could compete on the global stage.
Another standout piece in the collection is the “three-color glaze painting,†inspired by the Silk Road and the Han Dynasty’s Luoyang Sancai pottery. This technique, developed in collaboration with national ceramic master Guo Love, brings a vibrant, dynamic aesthetic to the watch dials. The use of traditional firing methods and rich glazes creates one-of-a-kind pieces that are both artistic and functional.
Zhang Shuyang, founder of Zhang Rice, emphasized the importance of merging traditional Chinese craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. He believes that this fusion represents the future of Chinese watchmaking and could eventually influence the global market. “Using our own scale, can Chinese-style watches become the next big trend?†he asked, highlighting the brand’s ambition to redefine the industry.
Zhang Rice, a subsidiary of Shanghai Yofang Investment Co., Ltd., is part of the renowned art collection brand Yanajuku. The name derives from Zhang Shuyang’s ancestor, who once managed a rice store. As a private institution, Yanajuku houses some of the most valuable Chinese artworks, including ancient ceramics, bronze mirrors, and porcelain.
With a deep passion for art, culture, and horology, Zhang Shuyang founded Zhang Rice to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation. The brand is the only one in the world that combines ceramic design, micro-painting, sculpture, and printing into high-end watchmaking. Over the years, it has successfully integrated Jingdezhen ceramic art into its timepieces, giving centuries-old traditions a modern twist.
In 2015, Zhang Rice aimed to expand its reach, positioning itself as a more creative and diverse brand. It sought to showcase the essence of Chinese culture through its “Art Wrist Watch†line, blending art, history, and modern design into a unique identity. With its commitment to quality and cultural storytelling, Zhang Rice is set to make a lasting impact on the global watch industry.
