DESIGN FIRM PERKINS+WILL OPENS NEW IDS CENTER OFFICE
Last month, Perkins+Will, a renowned architecture and design firm based in Chicago, officially opened its newly renovated office in downtown Minneapolis. This move marked a significant shift for the local branch, which had been located in the historic Essex Building for the past 15 years. The decision to consolidate their operations into a single-floor space came after careful consideration of their needs and growth trajectory.
The new office, while boasting slightly more than half the square footage of its predecessor, has been meticulously designed to maximize efficiency and functionality. A striking gallery wall, stretching 12 feet high and spanning 200 feet, serves as a central feature. This innovative design element not only provides ample Storage for materials and supplies but also includes small phone booths for private conversations and dedicated areas for presentations and printing.
Design Principal Dave Dimond expressed his enthusiasm about the new layout, emphasizing how it fosters collaboration by allowing team members to easily connect and interact. He noted that the office's adaptability, with no fixed furniture, allows for seamless transitions between collaborative brainstorming sessions and focused individual workspaces.
Perkins+Will approached this redesign with a "do no harm" philosophy, preserving the original concrete floors and high ceilings. This commitment to sustainability extended beyond aesthetics; nearly half of the materials used were salvaged from their previous location, including much of the new wood sourced from rapidly renewable Aspen forests. The firm even paid tribute to notable figures in design history by naming their meeting rooms after influential landscape architects Anna and Lawrence Halprin, interior designer Florence Knoll, and architect Philip Johnson.
As Dimond explained, "We wanted to honor the contributions of those who have shaped our industry." The office's interior reflects this ethos through thoughtful touches like these nods to design heritage, creating an environment that feels both modern and respectful of its roots.
