Recently, a groundbreaking surgery took place in Malaysia, where oral and maxillofacial surgeon Mohd Nazimi Abd Jabar successfully repaired severe facial damage caused by a car accident using 3D printed implants. The surgical team, led by Nazimi, collaborated with the National University of Malaysia to complete the operation. Using 3D modeling software, the team designed a custom implant, which was then 3D printed using titanium material. The final product closely matched the patient's facial structure, particularly around the skull, eye socket, and back of the head.

Nazimi emphasized how traditional X-ray scans would not have provided sufficient information to accurately assess the injury. The 3D printed model gave the surgeons a clear, tangible representation of the patient’s anatomy, enabling them to plan the procedure more effectively.
"The implants encourage natural bone growth and can withstand temperature changes and stress," Nazimi explained. "Because they are tailored to each patient, they are easier to implant, reducing surgery time and improving outcomes. Knowing the exact size of the incision and the precise location of the injury beforehand significantly enhances the quality and success rate of the procedure."
