[China Packaging Network News] On July 27, the Korea Agricultural News Agency released a report highlighting a groundbreaking packaging technology designed to extend the freshness of small tomatoes. This innovative method involves replacing the air inside the packaging with a specially formulated gas mixture, which helps maintain the quality and longevity of the fruit. The core concept of this technology is to package small tomatoes in a controlled atmosphere, where the air is replaced by a blend of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Specifically, 750 grams of tomatoes are placed into a container, where the air is first removed to create a vacuum. Afterward, the container is filled with a gas mixture consisting of 91% nitrogen, 6% oxygen, and 3% carbon dioxide. The plastic film used for this packaging is engineered to maintain stable gas concentrations in environments ranging from 10°C to 20°C, with an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of 25,000 cc/24 hr·m². In a 15°C environment, this new technique has proven to be significantly more effective than traditional vacuum packaging. It reduces the respiration rate of small tomatoes by one-third and extends their freshness from just three days to six days. Beyond preserving freshness, the technology also helps maintain the fruit's vibrant color, firm pulp texture, and the freshness of the stem, ensuring that the tomatoes remain visually appealing and of high quality for longer periods. This advancement represents a major step forward in food preservation, offering both consumers and producers a more sustainable and efficient way to handle fresh produce. As the global demand for longer-lasting, high-quality fruits continues to grow, such innovations are becoming increasingly vital in reducing food waste and improving supply chain efficiency.
